To participate in our live Sawdust Sessions and Hands Online! classes, you need the right computing equipment and Internet connection. Same goes for our archived Sawdust Sessions and Shop Tips. It doesn't need to be fancy or expensive, but we do recommend:
  • A reasonably capable computer. If you have a PC, it should be a Pentium 3-class computer, its equivalent, or better. For Macs, G4 or better.
  • A reasonably fast graphics card with 128 MB of memory or better.
  • A fast Internet connection. DSL is minimum, cable is better.
  • A comfortable place to sit while you participate. Most classes last 80 minutes.

Additionally, you need up-to-date software. We webcast our live classes and Sawdust Sessions in Windows Media (.wmv). To see and hear  the video, you'll need:

  • A recent browser. Internet Explorer 6 or 7, Safari 2 or 3, Netscape 8 or 9.
  • A plug-in that allows you to view Windows Media files.

Our pre-recorded, archived Sawdust Sessions and Shop Tips are streamed to you in Adobe Flash. So, in addition to a recent browser, you'll also need:

  • A plug-in that allows you to view Flash.

If you think your hardware, software, and furniture are all up to the task, then your ready to see how your computer works with our virtual classrooms.

To test the archived classroom, click here!

After you click, your computer will jump to a "test classroom." A video will begin to play and Craftsman/author Nick Engler will explain the unique features of our classroom and how to use them. If the video does not play or it plays poorly, consult our FAQ to help solve the problem.

PS: If you have a problem using the classroom and you discover a solution that is not covered in our FAQ, please e-mail us with a description of you problem and the solution you found so we can add it to the troubleshooting guide. Your kindness will help make the road easier for others to travel. Our email address is nick@shopsmith.com.
